Kohl’s Kids Scholarship

The Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program awards money to young volunteers, ages six to 18, for community service.
Winners are awarded these amounts:
- Store winners of 2100 Kohl’s stores receive a $50 gift card.
- Regional winners receive $1000 in college scholarship money.
- 10 National winners receive $9000 each in college grant money & $1000 to donate to a nonprofit organization on their behalf.
The volunteer must document and detail how s/he has gone above and beyond what a normal volunteer has accomplished. Winners of this scholarship do not just accomplish the expected minimum, instead they go above and beyond what is expected of them. The volunteer must have made a positive impact on the community for the entire year. Volunteers must also be nominated by an adult 21 years or older.
2009 National winners include Mimi Ausland of Bend, Oregon who created two websites to help feed homeless cats and dogs. She designed both sites, found local sponsors, worked directly with the Human Society of Central Oregon and promoted her project. Due to Ausland’s work, $250,000 worth of pet food has been donated to homeless animals.
Rocco Fiorentio of Vorhees, New Jersey was born blind. Rocco’s parents formed The Little Rock Foundation, which raises awareness about blindness and provides resources for families with a blind child. Rocco has been the ambassador of this organization for seven years and makes speeches about awareness for the needs of blind children in the NJ State Legislature. Former Governor Jon Corzine has made October Blind Awareness Month in NJ, crediting Rocco for the inspiration. Due to Rocco’s speeches, the legislature gave $1.2 million for Braille education and services in the state.
Anna Rose of Evergreen, Colorado started an organization called Sight Angels, in which she donates free eyeglasses to children all over the world. Sight Angels has donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, migrant farm workers, refugees from Darfur and local homeless shelters. To date, Rose has donated more than $265,000 worth of eyeglasses.
