Blogging Scholarship

The Blogging Scholarship awarded by the Daniel Kovach Scholarship Foundation is a great opportunity for college scholarship money.  The Blogging Scholarship is very unique and is offered to students who are currently enrolled full-time at a postsecondary institution.  In other words, this is not open to high school seniors.  But it is open to college freshmen.

Here are the award amounts:

  • Grand prize winner receives $10,000 in prize money.
  • 1st runner up receives $2000.
  • 2nd runner up receives $1000.

To enter, you must be enrolled in college and maintain a blog about your interests.  If you are a spammer, you are not eligible.  Applicants must be US citizens and attend school in the US only.  All winners must be willing to be publicized on the scholarship’s homepage.

The main qualification to receive this college grant money is passion.  You must exude excitement and overall passion for the subject of your blog.  As the homepage says, passion is important and helps make the world a better place.  Even if you are a hobby blogger as long as you show passion, you are a welcome applicant.

To enter, an applicant must submit a 300-word or less essay answering one of a series of questions.  Sample questions include:

  • If you nominated a friend, what makes them and their blog so special?
  • How have you used blogging to help yourself or others?
  • Why did you start blogging?  What does blogging mean to you?

The 2008-09 winner, David Mauro of Colorado College, won $10K in savings for college with his blog called EvictRick.com.  The blog centers around evicting Texas Governor Rick Perry out his mansion because the taxpayers cannot afford his pricey accommodations.  The 2007-08 winner, Kimberly Klein of Loyola University School of Law, blogs about her journey through law school, motherhood and cancer — all at the same time.

One caveat about this scholarship is the application dates change, so you must check the dates or email danielkovach[at]gmail.com.

If you have a blog and are passionate about it, make sure to enter.  Make sure your 300 word or less essay is sharp, concise and displays passion with every word.  Also, before entering, your chances of winning will most likely increase with a professional design and great writing.  Proofread to ensure there are no errors.

The Blogging Scholarship is a great opportunity for educational financial aid in an unorthodox way.  Don’t hesitate to enter if you love your blog and it inspires those around you.  And don’t hesitate to nominate a student blogger.
