My daughter, a gifted middle class high school student, was accepted into the highly prestigious summer programs at Harvard, Brown, Stanford, and Notre Dame. Only Brown offered a decent amount of financial aid, yet it was not enough. Stanford’s offer was pathetic, and Harvard’s was the worst. The long and short of it is that my daughter will be stuck home this summer while a bunch of rich kids, who have been tutored and mollycoddle their whole lives, will be taking advantage of, yet another, Ivy League learning opportunity. I know: Harvard’s endowment is down to 26 billion, so they are really suffering. The lesson from all this: there is no real meritocracy in American education–especially not for the middle class, and especially not at Ivy League summer programs for the sons and daughter of only the rich. I have talked with other families and they are in the same kind of financial lockout situation.
